Turtle Camp at Playa las Tortugas, Riviera Nayarit, Mexico
The Platanitos Turtle Camp is located on the grounds of Playa las Tortugas, Mexico's Leading Eco-Resort.
The sea turtle conservation program has increased the turtle population along Mexico's Pacific Coast. Guests staying in the Villas at Playa Las Tortugas get a hands on experience in protecting the endangered Olive Ridley turtle that is centuries old. This is an experience of a lifetime as eggs are collected from nesting turtles and as hatchlings are released to begin their new life at sea.
The sunsets at Playa las Tortugas display a rainbow of color almost every evening.
As the baby turtles are released they find their way to the water leaving behind their distinct tracks in the wet sand.
Thousands of hatchlings move toward the sunset and swim to safe cover in seaweed until they are old enough to feed on their own.
This little turtle is certainly happy that it is time to go!
Djuna visited us with her family this summer and released her first baby turtles.
Heather spent several weeks with us last season, coaxing the new hatchlings and encouraging their safe passage.
Each evening everyone lines up to release the days hatch.
This female turtle has just settled in to begin laying her eggs, usually over 100 at a time.
As the turtle is nesting, she is in a trance, which allows us to measure her and collect the eggs as she drops them.
The Turtle Camp is a great gathering spot for guests and volunteers, right on the beach, and close to the surf break.
The Playa las Tortugas beach has gently rolling surf and great boogie boarding
10 miles - just try to walk to the end of our beach and back in a day!
The Villas and gardens of Playa las Tortugas are located in an old working coconut plantation. The coconuts are still harvested today.
