Eurozone countries have largely adopted a newer and more secure credit card technology that is not compatable with the US magnetic strip style credit cards. Its called Chip and Pin, using a micro chip and pin number to perform transactions. US credit cards may not work with merchants, so you could have problems using your credit card overseas.
