Southern Vermont College is a mission-driven, intentionally small, student-focused institution located on over 370 acres of the historic former Everett estate on the eastern slope of Mt. Anthony in Bennington, Vermont. Founded in 1974 but with roots dating to 1926, SVC serves a diverse range of students from over 20 states in 16 academic programs, and sponsors 12 NCAA Division III athletic programs. The signature facility on campus is the Edward Everett family’s distinctive mansion, The Orchards, built between 1911 and 1914 from native blue limestone in the style of a European chateau, which currently serves as the academic and administrative hub of the college. SVC also owns the Laumeister Art Center, given to the college in 2017, which houses a 315-seat theatre, galleries showing seasonal exhibitions and a sizable permanent collection, and the unique Covered Bridge Museum dedicated to one of Vermont and Bennington County's outstanding attractions.
The college’s mission statement: "Southern Vermont College affirms a deep belief in the potential of every individual. We embrace diversity in all its forms, fostering excellence and personal responsibility in each member of our community. Grounded in the liberal arts, our programs prepare students to look beyond boundaries, to engage their communities, and to excel in their professional endeavors".
