Ellen Highstein began her career as a composer, graduating from The Juilliard School and subsequently studying composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger as a Fulbright Scholar and conducting under Pierre Boulez in Basel. She received an M.S. in Education from New York University, served as a faculty member at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and was a member of the Pre-College Division faculties at both The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music.
Ellen Highstein was named Director of the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) by Seiji Ozawa in 1997. In this capacity she is respon¬sible for the planning, implementation and oversight of all artistic and administrative as¬pects of the TMC, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer institute for advanced mu¬sical study, which will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2015. She works with about 100 faculty members in programs comprising orchestra, opera, cham¬ber music, composition and conducting, inter-arts and special projects.
Highstein served as Executive Director of Concert Artists Guild, a career development organization that works with exceptional young soloists and chamber groups, for the previous nine years, and for seven years was a member of the music program staff of the New York State Council on the Arts. She has served as consultant and panelist for government and foundations including the National Endowment on the Arts, Knight Foundation, Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, and the Rockefeller Foundation - Arts and Humanities Division. She was the author of one of the most widely-read books on career development for classical musicians, Making Music in Looking Glass Land, and has lectured on the subject for conservatories and universities across the country. Her articles have appeared in The Strad, American Music Teacher, Chamber Music Magazine, and Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians: American Groves.
