Gretta's Bio:Gretta Byrne studied archaeology at University College Dublin and she first began work on the archaeology of North Mayo in 1981 as a student volunteer on Seamas Caulfield's Belderrig excavation. She spent many years surveying the bogs, discovering and mapping an entire landscape of field systems, houses and tombs that were preserved beneath the peat. Gretta tells us about the amazing history of Ceide Fields which was discovered in the 1930's by a farmer burried under several feet of bog growth and dates back to the stone age. As the bog fields were uncovered stone foundations to buildings, burial sites, and community structures were unearthed. Today, after extensive archeology project over 50 square miles of land have been uncovered and documented.
