Belvedere House Gardens & Park, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath Ireland

Album Description: History, beauty, intrigue, passion and atmosphere make Belvedere an enchanting experience. One of Ireland’s finest historic houses, together with gardens and landscaped parkland has been exquisitely restored. The Victorian Walled Garden contains old rose beds, herbaceous borders, a vegetable potager and fragrant herb garden.

Belvedere House is Georgian dating from approx 1740. It was designed by the renowned German Architect Richard Castles. It is the first bowed end house built in Ireland. Belvedere is a grand house of modest proportions, intended for use as a hunting lodge or villa. It also boast some of the finest Rocco plaster work in Europe, with free handed sculpted work by the French Artist Cramillion.

Belvedere House is set in a majestic 160 acres of maintained parklands, one of the very few surviving naturalistic Georgian parklands. The estate is on the shores of Lough Ennell one of Irelands largest inland lakes covering over 3750 acres. Lough Ennell is very shallow with 1/3 being less than 10 feet deep, and very gentle gradient, it also very rich in diverse wild life.

The Jealous Wall is Belvedere’s largest (and indeed Ireland’s Largest) Folly, built in 1760 to mimic the ruins of an Abbey. It true purpose was to conceal the view between two rivalling brother’s houses. The other follies on the estate are the Grotesque Gothic Arch, again built in 1760 to be an eye-catcher at the end of the open parkland. It is said to be the abode of an anchorite or hermit, but has been liken to a stylised screaming face. The Gazebo is the final folly on the estate which is a octagonal in shape, built of stone with a brick lining and Ogee windows.

Meandering through the wood land is a very pretty stream, which is over hung in many areas with trees and lots of wild flowers.

The woodlands and parkland have abundant flowers and grasses, each season brings it own charm.
