Ten Floors of Fantastic Maritime Exhibits in Hamburg's HafenCity Quarter on the Harbor

Probably the most recommended museum in Hamburg, the International Maritime Museum lives up to its illustrious reputation. The museum contains nine floors of fantastic collections, illustrating both the famous and historic presence of Hamburg as a port and shipping city as well as the far vaster picture of international maritime history and nautical developments.

The museum is located in the HafenCity quarter, a recently redeveloped area of the city center on the harbor. The building is an enormous former warehouse called Kaispecher B, or quay warehouse B, done in the old red brick style characteristic of the district. The inside offers stunning views of the harbor. It contains ten floors, called decks, each with a different theme and all creatively designed and filled with the collection's more than 40,000 objects. The rich interior design of the museum is beautiful and actually gives the feeling of walking through a ship with its wood floors and panels of wood-covered walls.

The decks' subjects cover world explorers, the history of ships, shipbuilding, weapons at sea, navies of the world, trade and travel, deep sea expeditions, an art gallery with four hundred years of marine paintings, over 30,000 mini models of ships, and special exhibitions. Highlights include a model of the submarine Nautilus from Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", preserved specimens of mysterious deep sea fish and other strange creatures, a one of a kind pure gold and platinum replica of Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria ship, a remarkably detailed model of the Bremerhaven container terminal, a huge and detailed Lego model of the Queen Mary 2, an international collection of navy uniforms, antique deep sea diving helmets, enormous anchors, a mini submarine from the German Navy, and an in-depth history of pirates.

The collection is nothing short of amazing, and appealing to all ages. It's essential viewing to complete a visitor's impression of Hamburg's history and presence in the world shipping industry, and to get quite a thorough education in international nautical history. Due to the extent of the collection make sure to budget enough time to cover it all.

The museum includes the Kaispecher B cafe as well as the Austernbar restaurant, an oyster bar, both found on the ground floor.
