Default Thread Title:  Tiergarten Park in the Berlin City Center

Tiergarten
Berlin Mitte 10557

Berlin's Largest Park Directly in the City Center

The Tiergarten is Berlin's largest park. The immense expanse of greenery occupies about one square mile in the very center of the city, in the area known as Mitte. It's the city's largest park.

The park is filled with walking and biking trails, and in many places the trees are so lush and thick that they nearly form a canopy overhead, making a cool and shady atmosphere in which to walk, run, jog, or bike. It's a favorite spot of locals due to the peacefulness of the surroundings and the sheer size. Even in such a popular attraction, it's hard not to find plenty of space all your own within the Tiergarten. It's a small paradise within the heart of the city.

Aesthetically appealing, there are many beautifully landscaped gardens, historic statues, and works of public art scattered throughout the beautiful park scenery. The largest of these is a Soviet memorial erected post World War II, complete with two tanks, soldiers' graves, marble columns, and a large statue of a Soviet soldier. Though not as large and imposing as the Soviet monument in the eastern Treptower Park, it's still quite an impressive sculpture. Other notable monuments include the Bismarck memorial and the Siegessäule, or Victory Column, a 226 foot high granite column topped by a golden-hued statue of a goddess. The column can be climbed to take in the breathtaking view from its observation deck.

The Tiergarten is also home to Bellevue Palace, currently the residence of German President Christian Wulff. There's also the oddly shaped Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of the Cultures of the World), a center for contemporary art from outside of Europe. Sarcastic Berliners refer to the upside down cowboy hat shaped building as "the pregnant oyster".

The Tiergarten in German means "animal garden", and it is also the home of the Berlin Zoo, found in the southwest of the park. There are also several restaurants and cafes throughout the expanse of the park, including the picturesque Teehaus in the Englischer Garten.

The Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) and Potsdamer Platz border the Tiergarten's boundaries to the east, and the western border encompasses the historic Strasse des 17. Juni, the Siegessäule, and the Berlin Zoo.
