Default Thread Title:  Leipzig Hauptbahnhof - Major Travel and Shopping Center

Leipzig Hauptbahnhof
Willy-Brandt-Platz 1
04109 Leipzig

One of Europe's Largest and Most Beautiful Train Stations, Conveniently Located Near Many of Leipzig's Major Sights

Leipzig, a city in the state of Saxony in eastern Germany, is a great location to visit and makes an especially convenient choice for a day trip from Berlin. The Central Station, or Hauptbahnhof, is one of the largest and most beautiful in Europe. It also brings travelers directly into the city center, and Leipzig happens to have a large number of tourist attractions all located within this center and in easy walking distance of the main train station. These include some of Leipzig's major sights of interest, like the Altes Rathaus on the Market Square, the popular Stasi history center in the Museum in der Runden Ecke, and some of Leipzig's major art museums, including the Museum der Bildenden Künste and the Kunsthalle der Sparkasse Leipzig.

In addition to its massive size, airy glasswork, and towering stone architecture, the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is a major shopping center. The Promenaden Hauptbahnhof contains more than two hundred and twenty shops. Among these are a wealth of trendy clothing retailers like Vero Moda, Mango, Tom Tailor, Orsay, Mexx, New Yorker, and Pimkie. There is also a selection of drugstores, cafes, bakeries, restaurants, and snack stands offering many kinds of foods, and supermarkets including the popular German discounter Aldi. The Promenaden remains open long hours even on Sundays, a welcome rarity for Germany.

Even among the beautifully impressive construction of many European train stations, the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof stands out with its gorgeous and even somewhat opulent appearance, which was largely constructed and modernized postwar, and its pleasantly airy atmosphere.

For those interested in locomotive history and development, there are several historic German steam and electric locomotives on display at the Hauptbahnhof.
