Default Thread Title:  Museum of Fine Arts - Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig City Center

Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig (Museum of Fine Arts)
Katharinenstrasse 10
04109 Leipzig

Excellent and Extensive Fine Arts Collection and Exhibitions in the Heart of Leipzig's City Center

Leipzig's Museum of Fine Arts (Museum der bildenden Künste) could not be more conveniently placed for travelers hoping to see something spectacular with limited time to spend. Everything about the museum is exceptional, from its unusual and impressive modern architecture to its many floors of art in various mediums as well as special exhibitions.

The collection ranges from paintings in the portrait gallery loaned by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Leipzig, a collection of New Masters paintings with works of Classicism, Romanticism, Impressionism, and Symbolism in Germany, and a collection of drawings from the Old Masters. The sculpture collection includes late medieval wooden pieces, modern bronzes, Saxon Baroque, to Classicist and Classic Modernism.

Artists with works represented in the collections of paintings, graphics, and sculpture include Claude Monet, Max Liebermann, Oskar Kokoschka, Giovanni Battista, Edvard Munch, Otto Dix, Peter Paul Rubens, Auguste Rodin, Max Klinger, Max Beckmann, and many more, including over five hundred works done by artists from the GDR. Although works are culled from many international sources, it's an excellent place to take in much of the local culture and history through a core of works in the collections from Leipzig and its own artists, with many of these found in the painting galleries.

The museum features several temporary exhibitions at any time, with a recent show of works by modern German artist Max Beckmann called Face to Face as a particularly popular example and excellently curated exhibit. His portrait gallery, incredible range of artistic styles and technique, historical influence, the impact and presence of personal relationships, and richly allegorical underpinnings of his work were fantastically highlighted throughout the extensive display. It also included a gallery of works by two modern artists heavily influenced by Beckmann, and a room where visitors, including children, could make and display their own art if they were inspired after visiting the exhibit.

The museum is located on Katharinenstrasse, a few blocks away from the Leipzig Haputbahnhof, just a few minutes' walk. A helpful tourist information center is located next door.

Ireland invites you to visit the world's only Pubunlobby. What's a Pubunlobby you ask? It's when you're on your way from Bunratty Castle to Giant's Causeway when a wrong turn ends up being perfectly right because before you know it you're sitting in a Dublin pub singing O' Danny Boy with a man named, of all things, Bobby.
