Default Thread Title:  Pilgrim Centers

Kerala is a South Indian state that is popular for its natural surroundings, landscapes and temples. The state is famous for preserving the age old culture and traditions. There are many temple towns and pilgrim centers in the state. Strong patronage and observance of religion in the day-to-day life has lead to the development of many temples and temple towns all over Kerala and India.

Pathanamthitta is an important district in Kerala with regard to pilgrim centers. The Pathanamthitta pilgrim centers include:

Sabarimala: This is a well known pilgrim center in Kerala that draws over 2 million people from all over South India during the months of November- January. The holy shrine of Lord Ayyappa is situated 914 mts above the sea level. Pilgrims observe strict austerities for 45 days before coming here to seek blessings of the Lord. This is located at a distance of 65 kms from Pathanamthitta, 190 kms from Thiruvanandapuram and 210 kms from Kochi.

Pandalam: This is a small town which is believed to be the birth place of Lord Ayyappa. The Valiyakoikal temple is located on the banks of the River Achenkovil and is modeled on the Sabarimala shrine. Pilgrims visit this shrine before proceeding to Sabarimala.

Aranmula- There is a Parthasarathy temple located on the banks of the holy river Pamba in this town. It is believed to be built by the Pandavas. The Vijnana Kalavedi at Aranmula imparts training in the traditional arts like Kathakali, classical dances and classical music.

Kaviyoor: Is situated 5 km from Thiruvalla on the banks of Manimala River. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Chengannur Mahadeva Temple: There is a famous Shiva temple here. In addition to the deity of Shiva, there is a deity of Parvathy. There is Sree Vallabha temple here.

Omallur : 5km from Pathanamthitta- There is a Rakthakanta Swamy Temple where an annual cattle fair is held in the Malayalam month of Meenam.

Malayalapuzha: 8 km from Pathanamthitta: There is a Bhagavathy temple here which is considered to be very powerful. The temple has beautiful wall paintings and artistic stone carvings,

Kadamanitta : 8 km from Pathanamthitta- There is a Devi temple here in which a ten day long Padayani performance is held in connection with the annual festival in April /may.
