The other beautiful backwaters which are the favourite of tourists are Valiyaparamba backwaters, Alumkadavu, Chandragiri, Pathiramanal, Willington Island, Thiruvallam etc. Kuttanad is yet another place famous for sailing options. The largest backwater stretch in Kerala is the Vembanad Lake which flows through three districts and opens out into the sea at the Kochi Port. The Astamudi Lake, literally having eight arms, which covers a major portion of Kollam district in the south, is the second largest and is considered the gateway to the backwaters.

The Kerala Backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to the American bayou.
