Default Thread Title:  Tips on Travel in Linz, Austria

My first choice in European car rentals is "Europe-By-Car." They will find you an available car at a value-packed rate in the category you are looking for and, since they work with every quality car rental brand, they save you tons of work in sorting out who has what and at what rate. I use them whenever I travel on the continent of Europe (for Ireland, I use Dooley Car Rentals) and have found them very reliable and straight-forward to work with so there are no expensive surprises when you go to pick up or drop off the car which happens with so many companies! They have an office in NYC so you can deal with them in US time zones easily. But you'll be dealing with a major car rental brand through them in the final analysis at special rates. Their site: http://www.europebycarblog.com/

You can also call Europe By Car in the US toll-free at 800-223-1516. They'll be able to sort out your needs. If you need special assistance, ask for Alfred Celetano, one of their Vice Presidents, and tell him I sent you along for special help.

As for what there is to see in Linz, Austria:
Linz is the musical crossroads for musical genius! Mozart wrote his 36th Symphony in Linz and Beethoven wrote his 8th Symphony there. Beethoven's piano that he used to write the 8th is in the Schlossmuseum. Check out the Ars Electronica for something more modern that will light up your life!

While you can print a list of things to do in Linz off your computer from the their tourism info website, I suggest that you go to the Tourist Information Office when you arrive in Linz. At any tourist office, at the Hauptbahnhof (train station) or at any Linz museum or hotel, you can buy a Linz Card. The card, for one day, will cost you 15 euros and for 3 days will cost 25 euros. If you are a student or entitled to a discount you'll find you can get the Linz Card for less. The card will get you onto public transportation for free and into museums for free as well as provide you with discounts at dozens and dozens of restaurants and attractions.

The cost to get into the Schlossmuseum is normally 6.50 euros and the Ars Electronica Center costs 8 euros for admission. But if you have a Linz Card, your cost of entry is free. If you've bought a one-day pass for 15 euros and you go to these 2 attractions, except for the unaccounted for .50 euros, you've gotten your value out of the card and everything else you do, all the public transportation that you use, is, essentially, free!

Given that public transportation is available in Linz, you may want to reserve your call rental for the day you are leaving Linz and get around free based on buying the Linz Card. Alternatively, if you're the "independent-type" and want the freedom to get around on your own schedule with a car available throughout, you will still find the card valuable because of its 'free admission' to museums and discounts to attractions and restaurants.

Can't wait to hear about your experiences! Where else in Austria are you going to? When do you arrive in Austria? In Linz?

You're going to have such a wonderful time!
