Question Thread Title:  Safari Tour Operators

There are so many!! Does anyone know which one does the best job of providing a high quality trip at a reasonable price... NOT necessarily the cheapest, but the best value for the money.

We are looking for a 2 week land package for Tanzania/Kenya in September or October. This is our first safari, but we have travelled extensively (and independently!) in Europe, South & Central America.

This is the perfect time to be talking with a strong travel agency. Agents keep up to date with companies and destintations, have contacts in the companies and know the history of what companies take care of client needs well. Planning a first safari is not a good time for a do-it-yourself project!

There are different kinds of companies that cater to differing interests, budgets and age groups. Your travel agent will match you with the safari operator that fits your lifestyle interests as well. Agents also have the advantage of working with tour operators and have feedback from returning clients as well as a pool of colleagues from their professional organizations to draw on to keep abreast of the quality of what tour operators are delivering.

Historically, there have been a number of companies that have done a great job delivering quality safari experiences in Africa to travelers. Among those have been Abercrombie and Kent, Big 5 Tours and Expeditions, and Micato Safaris. A newcomer on the scene is Virgin Bush Safaris. I generally feel better using a company that has longevity and a history of quality performance which gives some assurance that the company knows what it is doing. But remember that past performance, while being a good indicator of what you can expect, never guarantees that your experience will be the same.

Your best bet lies with the recommendations of a good travel agent. Check out your local area for a strong agency and ask if there is an Africa Specialst in the agency to assist you.

Keep me posted on your plans! I'm interested in knowing about your choices.

I would contact your nearest travel clinic who will be able to give you the best advice about what shots are needed given the location and timing of your trip as well as any risks. Just google "Travel Clinic" and the name of your city. This is a must. Also, you may want to consider going to a non-malarial area for your safari.
