Default Thread Title:  Best time to see active volcano in Hawaii. . .

Volcano National Park is on the BIg Island of Hawaii in Hawaii. I prefer to stay at in the area around Kona and take a day during your visit to drive to Hilo which is about a 2 to 3 hour drive depending on traffic. The road is one lane in each direction for a good portions so if traffic backs down you can see how that would slow that journey but the views are terrific and you'll enjoy the drive.
Stop in the town of Hilo to take a walk around and have a bite. It's a very cute place.

Continue on to Volcano National Park. Plan to get there early enough that you can explore and still have time to start your return drive before it gets dark. You don't want to be in Volcano National Park at night! It gives a new meaning to the word 'dark.' Be sure you have flashlights with you just in case the sun sets while you are there.

The volcano is in a constant state of eruption and you can see lava flows from a variety of places.

The best time to go to Hawaii, or anyplace else in the world, is when you have the time, your budget can afford the journey, and you are in good health. Don't wait for the 'perfect' time to take any trip as life has a nasty habit of getting in the way of our good plans!
Looking forward to your posting your feedback on your experience in Hawaii.

Consider staying at the Hilton Waikaloa Village in Kona which is a fantastic resort and is just a couple of miles from Kona Airport, which looks like an open-air Pizza Hut!

You're going to have the best time!

Default Thread Title:  Visiting Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park

Aloha!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is an amazing place to visit, and is the most popular attraction in the entire state, after all, it is home to one of the world’s most active yet “user-friendly” volcanoes, Kilauea, and it is Hawaii’s ONLY World Heritage Site. Be sure to arrive in the daytime, and get your bearings at the Visitor Center, where rangers can show you where the action is, and help you plan a great experience depending on how much time you have. Right now, Halemaumau Crater is active and a beautiful plume of steam and gas is visible in the daytime. If you choose to stay after dark, at night you can see a the mesmerizing crimson glow from the lava below the surface reflecting into the plume. This crater is the legendary home of Pele, Hawaii’s volcano goddess. Other park highlights include Thurston Lava Tube and the Chain of Craters Road, hiking Kilauea Iki and much more. Visit www.nps.gov/havo for more information. If you’re driving over from West Hawaii, be sure to save some time to visit historic downtown Hilo – its shops, museums, restaurants and world famous farmers market have made it one of the Big Island’s top “small town” destinations.

Mahalo and enjoy!
