My fiance and I are honeymooning in Mykonos in September. At the tail end of our trip, we'll be staying in Athens one night. Any recommendations for a good hotel near the airport .. but maybe also close enough to see some other sights in Athens while we're there?

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I've always stayed at the Athens Hilton. It's not a big dealto get to the airport if you leave enough time but with normal traffic it's not a big trip. We always stay there the night before we fly and it's never been an inconvenience. It's located right on two main streets for easy getaway and its location places you on good roads so you're not caught in small Athens streets where the traffic backs up.



What I like about the Athens Hilton is that half of the hotel faces the Acropolis. If you book there, let me know your reservations info complete with the names on the reservation/date of arrival & check out and booking number if possible and I'll send a note ahead to get you VIP'd and to try to get you a room on the Acropolis side.

At night,the sky is like velvet and from the terrace of your hotel room it
feels like you can reach out and touch it! They have great lighting on the
Acropolis and its hillside and it's just gorgeous.



Also, the hotel is lovely and the rooms are modern and comfortable. If
you eat there, the food is very good but look out for bread and butter
at dinner because they will charge you for that and also
expect a 'cover charge' at dinne (ask about what the fee or % is) because that is for 'setting the table and putting bread and butter on it! We're not
quite used to that but when in Athens. . .

They also have a very nice pool area and lunch/snack area near the pool
that is very relaxing and makes you think you're at a resort and not in a bustling city.



The big advantage is that if you walk out the front door, make a left to the corner and a right to cross the big street and follow it all the way down the hill and just keep walking downhill following the main street, you can walk into Plaka which is a darling area filled with good cafes and small restaurants (some not so small) with outdoor cafes that are practically on the roadway of the street and lots of adorable boutiques and fine jewelry (and not so fine but beautiful and affordable) stores. One of the first
stores you come to is a shop where, when you walk down about 3 steps to
enter the store there is a thousands of years old giant water jug artifact that was found when they were digging out the store space. It is still partly impaled in the earth but the rest is exposed and it is so Greek to walk into a retail shop and find a true museum quality piece just sitting there!



If you have a chance, go into the subway system even if
you're not taking a train. On the walk down to Plaka you will pass a
station When they built the subway system, a huge number of ancient artifacts were found in the earth when they were excavating, and
they made displays of them inside the subway train stations. I haven't been
inside a station but I understand it's quite amazing.

Also, when you're in Plaka, you'll pass the entrance for a cable car that goes to the top of Lykavittos Hill. Try to go there about an hour before sunset. The cable car takes you to the top of Lykavittos where you will have a spectacular view of the Acropolis and Athens lying below. The entrance is right on that long street you've been walking downhill on into Plaka. At the top, you'll also find a terrace where you can have a drink and watch the sunset which is an experience you will take with you forever as a special memory.

Also at the top of Lykavittos Hill, you'll find a restaurant. Ask your concierge at your hotel to make a reservation for you for dinner. If you go up to the top 30 to 60 minutes before sunset, have your drink while watching evening fall upon Athens and then go inside the restaurant, just steps from the terrace, and have dinner, this could be the icing on the cake of your Greece honeymoon experience. What a wonderful way to end your spectacular trip.

ONE MORE THING: When you are in Mykonos, be sure to take a day trip to Delos, the birthplace of the Greek God Apollo. It is reported to be the brightest part of Greece so be sure to take your sunglasses and a hat! There are fantastic ruins on the island, which is a lovely 20 minute boat ride from Mykonos. You'll find parts of Greek columns, portions of building, and other historic artifacts from antiquity. Your concierge can organize your reservation and ticket or you can go to the port area and buy tickets to do it yourself. I always find it better to have plans made in advance so you don't find that you can't get on a tour for hours or days when you just show up at the ticket office. They limit the number of people who are allowed per group and you have to take a tour for the security of the Delos and its treasures. You actually get to walk up to around the kinds of items you only see from the other side of a rope or glass window in a museum. It's truly a 'museum island' and is so worth the trip!

If memory serves, the parking lots/ramp are actually city owned and not hotel owned. At any rate, if you're staying at the Marriott it's nice and easy. You can opt to have the parking added onto your room bill. They will then give you a pass to use as you go in and out throughout the weekend. If you opt not to have it added onto your room bill, then you can just pay as you leave the ramp/lot. You don't need to go out each day and feed a meter.
