Default Thread Title:  Response to Questions: What is most expensive/luxurious hotel in Bangkok?

I thought I'd ask my good friend and Skalleague, Andrew Wood, who lives in Bangkok and is the General Manager of the Chaophya Park Hotel & Resorts right on the riverfront of the Chaophya River. His answer is below and my comments are below that:

From Andrew Woods in Bangkok:
"My personal preference is the Chaophya Park Hotel, we are the only hotel to
have 4 ballrooms and a specialised team of wedding professional at your
disposal 24/7 for the most luxurious weddings. However I guess you might say
that was rather an incestuous answer...I think the most expensive would be
the Peninsula and/or the Oriental but parking is really difficult.

With best regards from Andrew in cool Bangkok ( it's 23c in the mornings and wonderful...the daytime it's 35c and brilliant blue slies...theee best time of year to visit Thailand!!)

I like Andrew's recommendations. I can tell you that The Oriental, which has shown up on the Best Hotels in the World many, many times and a long period of time was listed as the best hotel in the world year after year, has a wonderful restaurant that is in the middle of the water and that you must take a very short boat ride to get to from the dock of the hotel to the dock of the restaurant. Once inside, they have a wonderful menu, their wait staff is dressed in traditional Thai costumes and they put on a very well done folklorique Thai show of music and dance. The dining tables are placed in a pit in the floor so, while you look like you are sitting on the floor dining in Thai fashion, you are actually sitting on molded seats at floor level with your legs in the pit on the lower floor. When you enter, it looks like everyone is eating while sitting on the floor but they are all sitting, western style, with that illusion created from the configuration of these dugouts in the floor for your legs. The tables, themselves, have short legs that are sitting on the higher floor level. This detail adds to the fun of the experience in trying to create a traditional Thai experience.

I would guess that The Oriental, in addition to their ballroom space, would consider closing the restaurant for a private function and that restaurant on its own little island would make an ideal place for a rehearsal dinner or wedding dinner depending on the number of people in your group.

I can also tell you that, while I haven't been there in about 10 years, my favorite place to stay in Bangkok is the Sheraton Royal Orchid. It is also right on the Chaophya River and it is attached, through the lobby of the hotel, to a wonderful shopping mall. In fact, my taylor's show is in that mall. If you need any clothes made for the wedding, they will get it done like magic in a day or two and they do great work. The name of the shop is ANS International Taylor. They are very reliable and have customers worldwide. The owner's name is Andy. They could handle everything from gowns to tuxedos and you wouldn't have to worry about luggage pieces, extra weight and I bet it will cost you less to have it done at ANS than to buy it wherever you live. . . unless maybe you live in Hong Kong!

Let us know where you decide to have your wedding and let us know if we can help you with any other suggestions or introductions.

Default Thread Title:  Luxurious Hotels in Bangkok

I can't imagine a list of luxurious hotels in Bangkok that doesn't include The Oriental. I know there is more competition today in Bangkok for great hotels but for many years The Oriental was rated the Number One hotel in the world so it would be hard to believe they've fallen off the charts altogether.

It's about 10 years since I was in Bangkok last but if I went tomorrow I'd probably pick The Sheraton Royal Orchid Hotel. Like The Oriental, it's right on the riverfront and it's attached to a wonderful mall so you don't have to go outside to get into the mall especially on hot, steamy or rainy weather days!
And, besides, my favorite tailor is located in that mall (if he hasn't moved!).
Great service, gorgeous views, and Starwood Hotels treatment all at value-packed rates. Love the brand!

Other services like beauty salon, spa services, 24-hour room service, friendly and professional staff and the suites are terrific!

Surprised that neither The Oriental nor the Sheraton Royal Orchid show up on your list.
