Default Training in Virginia

Hi Guys!

Glad to be the part of this forum

I know my question is not associated with your conversation. My brother is learning karate in after school program. He is residing near Virginia Beach. Now he is moving with me in Richmond.

I don’t want to disturb his classes. Are video tutorials beneficial for him or is it necessary that he join some school for his karate practice?

Thank you

Hi!

I'm so sorry this question went unanswered for so long! Hopefully your Brother is still training or this answer will help others.

In person instruction is crucial, at every level of experience. Video, can be helpful, at least if they are the right video, however for beginners it can be hard to determine which videos will help and which might harm. Also, consistency is very important, especially for beginners. Since every instructor, even within the same organization or dojo, has a slightly different experience level and/or technical ability it can sometimes be confusing for beginners to stay on track with multiple influences on their instruction. Now add the nearly endless variety of instruction and look of individuals from different schools, let alone different styles of martial art, and the beginning can become overwhelmed as to what is "correct".

Having one source that can also provide consistent corrections and actual physical interaction is going to be crucial for beginners. At the very least, focus on a particular set of videos, from a consistent source.

I personally would recommend the JKA series from the 1980's which I've used as a resource and archetype. You might ask for a recommendation from your Brother's former instructor as well both as to video instruction and a referral in the new location.

Hope this helps!
Dru
